Statement from Becky Brownlee, President of the Board of Directors

Thoughts on Kami Geoffray’s legacy and the path forward for Every Body Texas

July 22, 2021

Last Friday, Kami Geoffray stepped down as the Chief Executive Officer of Every Body Texas. As we reflect on her time with this organization, my fellow Board members and I want to express our deep gratitude to Kami for her leadership and absolute devotion to the mission of Every Body Texas. Supporting access to high-quality sexual and reproductive healthcare for all people in Texas is not easy, but she excelled as CEO and our organization clearly reflects that today.

Kami joined Every Body Texas, then called Women’s Health and Family Planning Association of Texas, in early 2016 with a strong desire to support the family planning safety net in Texas as it worked to rebound from years of state-level attacks. In 2017 she took on the role of CEO as the organization was facing considerable challenges from the federal administration.

Weathering inconsistent grant cycles and a Title X rule change that threatened the stability of the provider network, Kami and the entire staff worked hard to ensure that providers received the support, funding, and information needed to offer high-quality sexual and reproductive healthcare services to clients across the state of Texas. Kami also oversaw the development of a new organization name and brand; a well-designed, informative website; and our inaugural strategic plan. The plan sets ambitious goals of expanding access to safe, unbiased, high-quality sexual and reproductive healthcare; establishing Every Body Texas as a thought leader in sexual and reproductive healthcare in Texas; and developing a strong and effective organizational infrastructure to meet these goals and reflect our values.

Over the last 15 months Kami led this organization and provider network through the challenges of an unprecedented global health crisis. This included implementation of remote training and technical assistance to providers and data collection improvements. Our staff adapted to COVID-related changes without missing a beat and our provider network went above and beyond to ensure continued access in a difficult environment.

The new CEO, whoever that person may be, will find an organization that is financially sound, expert in program and policy development, and committed to principles of Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. Our strategic plan provides a clear and exciting path forward, and we have a talented staff who is ready for what comes next. The Board is particularly grateful to Berna Mason, Director of Service Delivery Improvement, and Matthew Thompson, Director of Financial Monitoring and Contract Compliance and acting Title X Project Director, who will act as interim executive leadership until a new CEO is named.

Every Body Texas has retained Koya Partners, an executive search firm that works exclusively with clients in the nonprofit field and has extensive experience with leadership searches in the areas of reproductive health and justice. We will provide updates in the coming weeks, including the position posting announcement, so stay tuned for more information!

We appreciate Kami’s leadership and are excited about the future of Every Body Texas. Thank you for your support of our work.
