Person-Centered Contraceptive Counseling Project

2017-2020

Putting clients at the center of their healthcare decisions

At Every Body Texas, we believe that when people are provided with complete and accurate information, they can make the best healthcare decisions for themselves. Person-centered contraceptive counseling involves treating each person as a unique individual with respect, empathy and understanding, providing accurate, easy to understand information about contraception based on the client’s needs and goals, and assisting clients in selecting a contraceptive method that is the best fit for their individual situation in a manner that reflects their preferences for decision making.

With funding from St. David’s Foundation, Every Body Texas developed and delivered person-centered contraceptive counseling training for providers in five central Texas counties (Bell, Caldwell, Hays, Travis, and Williamson Counties). The project delivered an in-person, one-day training to providers and a corresponding online tool kit to further support providers with details and strategies for person-centered contraceptive counseling.

On February 19, 2019, Every Body Texas trained a group of more than 50 central Texas providers on the skills and techniques of person-centered contraceptive counseling. In a pre-training survey, providers also identified the need for more training on long acting reversible contraception (LARC) insertion, which was added to the training day.

Following the in-person training, Every Body Texas developed the Person-Centered Contraceptive Counseling Tool Kit, which will be available in December 2020 as a free resource.
